THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO EXPERIENCING BIO BAY IN FAJARDO, PUERTO RICO

couple night kayak yunque national forest

There are several options for exploring Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays – you can go by kayak, waterbike, or powerboat. What option you’re given depends on which bay you head to and the tour provider you choose. For example, in Bio Bay Fajardo, motorized vessels are prohibited whereas in La Parguera they are not. If you’re interested in exploring Laguna Grande, we recommend booking with Island Journeys.

Compared to other bioluminescent bays, Fajardo’s Bio Bay stands out for its visibility and the pristine state of its ecosystem. The bay is also part of a nature reserve, which helps preserve the delicate environment needed for the dinoflagellates to thrive. This makes the Bio Bay in Fajardo not only a natural wonder but also a symbol of the importance of environmental preservation.

What Makes the Bio Bay in Fajardo So Special?

Puerto Rico is a popular tourist destination. It has beautiful beaches, good weather, and breathtaking nature. There are many tours available in Puerto Rico that you can take to explore the country. Fajardo is filled with unique beauty and magic by being home to one of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays. Bio Bay Fajardo is also known as Laguna Grande and is one of the most famous attractions on the island.

Bioluminescence is a chemical reaction that happens when oxygen interacts with microorganisms in the water, which produces light at a certain wavelength. Not all bays have this phenomenon, but the ones that do have it usually happen at night when there’s no sunlight, so you can see them better.

In Puerto Rico, you can find three bioluminescent bays. Two are located on the mainland, Laguna Grande in the town of Fajardo (east coast) and La Parguera near the town of Lajas (southwest coast). The third bay, Mosquito Bay, is located on the south shore of the island of Vieques. If you have never experienced putting your hand in the water and it lighting up, then you have to visit Bioluminescent Bay, Puerto Rico. Remember there are few places in the world where you can experience this bioluminescence, and we are fortunate to have three bioluminescent bays. We invite you to discover this wonder.

Best Time to Visit Bio Bay in Fajardo

The bioluminescent bays in Bio Bay Fajardo are visible year-round, but as we discussed above things like weather and phases of the moon can impact the bio bay’s radiance. Our recommendation for the best time to go to a bio bay would be sometime between December – February. These months fall outside of the rainy season, which means the water will be more clear, and you’re less likely to get rained on during the tour itself. March typically brings more tourists, particularly those on spring break, so while the weather is still great, it tends to be a bit busier and tours sell out a lot quicker. That being said, you can always book your tour in advance!

If you’re planning a trip in March, and want to go on a bio bay, we strongly recommend booking your tour. At the same time, it is not recommended, but not forbidden, to visit a bio bay during the rainy season. That’s from June to November. Sometimes it is harder to see the glow because of heavy rainfall.
